little Art Play & Explore: Paint, Clay and Print play (16 months- 5 years)
TUESDAYS @ Raum Schwalbe 16:30- 17:20
Come straight into the back room at the class start time, getting changed into messy play clothes beforehand (there is space outside the door, with a clothes rack by the toilet and baby changing table.)
Overview
The little Art Explorers class offers child-led and non-themed tactile and mark making play. It is for children from 16 months until 5 years, and their parent/ carer to explore their creativity together. The class is self-guided parent and child process art based, using non-toxic kindergarten paint, and real high-quality art materials for print, mixed-media and clay. We use in class our big colour-changing light box for multi-sensory explorations, perfect for curious little artists, (examples in the photos.) The activities presented help develop children's creativity, gross and fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, and sensory perceptions.
How the LAB works
We curate a free play LAB environment for the participants to discover, experiment, take risks and solve problems, building confidence and independence over the duration of the block. This class offers a focus on a few simple materials each week, in the safe framework of a children’s art class, without anyone prescribing ‘correct rules’ of using resources. Emphasis is on playing and discovering pattern, texture, scale, contrast, colour, alongside one another, and not on set outcomes. Boxes of wide ranging conventional and unconventional tools are available to rummage through and provoke inquiry such as painting rollers, toy cars. Expect messy and sensory fun on this little journey through our 2D and 3D art LAB. More about the little art concept can be found here.
Artist Educator/ Parent role
This is a child-led learning environment, where we promote freedom of expression. The class is non-leader led but an artist educator will help facilitate your exploratory journey of discovery, please do ask us questions and share your reflections. We observe and respond to the actions through playful exchange or documenting actions to learn for future ideas in the block. We encourage parents to enjoy in trusting their child to lead the way at their own pace, and express themselves in whatever way they would like to. We wish for the children to freely participate and take risks as they move around the workstations, and for grown ups to be their child’s creative playmate, mirroring what they do, asking questions, sharing in what they discover. Your role may also become that of an assistant, getting more paper at their request for example. During the last few minutes of the class time we have tidy up time, an important life skill to learn.
The class leader will conduct themselves in English, and some support in German can be offered if preferred. The most important language is the language of art!

I attended Harriet’s 8 week experimental image making course for adults earlier this year and felt wonderfully inspired every week. I have felt detached from my creativity for a long time and Harriet’s course & guidance made me feel connected again and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Each week we experimented with different mediums & techniques which I wouldn’t have thought to have used if not for the course. It has given me a new insight on what it is to be creative and a renewed sense of my own creativity. As well as meeting some new people, Harriet’s course is almost therapeutic in it’s approach, I cannot recommend her courses enough for anyone who wants to re-engage their creativity, explore new techniques and most importantly have lots of fun!

We have attended two terms of Little Art playground classes as well as one of the workshops and they have never disappointed us. The class itself is free play where each child can let their imaginations run wild and explore two whole rooms plus the hallway set up with different materials and art mediums based on the theme of the week. Harriet has everything from your typical craft materials to real art supplies to things we have never even heard of and now regularly use at home. Every class begins with the "magic suitcase" which every child looks forward to. The class closes nicely with a story and each child gets a 'little artist' sticker. A special treat and a magical encounter with art from start to finish.

Each week Harriet has delighted my little boy and I with a new story, beginning with a journey into the magical suitcase and moving onto a series of creative, inventive activities designed to engage the littlest of artists and their grown-ups. Leo and I have particularly loved getting wet and messy in the sensory bin each week and playing with the shadow puppets in the light tent. I've also enjoyed discovering new stories I can share with my son, as well as revisiting some old favourites from my childhood. Harriet has provided us with a brilliant introduction to creative play.

Thank you for the fantastic birthday party! My 4 year old and all of us had amazing time at Little Art. Harriet is very talented and inspiring. Everyone explored individual art from while staying in the same theme. It was as if a magical journey they took together. I would totally recommend to anyone who loves creative experience - it's really a GIFT to children.

We had a truly unique birthday party at little art! Harriet organised an underwater theme party for my whale-crazy 7-year-old, giving him an experience that a regular birthday venue could never have offered. The kids were completely captivated by the stories and art activities, and loved shining their torches around the dark, underwater world they created to light up their artworks. Then off to the back room, where we'd set up our own cakes and snacks, to sing happy birthday! Thanks for a wonderful day and great memories Harriet!
